Friday, August 14

JOHN - Friday morning, Jayma and I went to breakfast with my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Schiebel. We met her at Egg & I where her former ISU student teacher from fall 2008 was going to join us for breakfast. We had a great conversation about student teaching and Lisa gave us a lot of great tips regarding student teaching. Lisa just took a job in San Antonio, at another Northside school, and says that she loved S.A. enough to want to stay here. In fact, there are a lot of ISU alum running around down here in Texas. With the great starting salary and reasonable cost of living, especially for a growing urban environment, S.A. is a very enticing place to live.

Lisa showed us some of the work that was required during student teaching. At first we were a little intimidated bu she said that as long as you don't put stuff off to the end of the semester, it's not that bad. Jayma and I both agreed to not do that and work together to get our stuff done. Lisa also told me that Mrs. Schiebel is a great cooperating teacher and that she'll really push you to be the best teacher I can be. I am excited about that because I want to be pushed b/c I know that the main purpose of my visit here is to student teach. That's my #1 priority. As much fun as I know we are going to have while down here, my job is become a better teacher. And it sounds as if I have the best teacher to help me accomplish that goal.
At the end of breakfast, Mrs. Schiebel reminded me of the teacher retreat on Saturday. I didn't have to come, it was only for teachers but she said that I would be more than welcome to attend. As much as I wanted to hit the pool, I accepted her invitation. I wanted to get to work on student teaching and didn't want to start saying "no" to things. It's important for student teachers to remember that school isn't just a 7 to 4 job. There are meetings and meetings and meetings. On top of that, there are seminars, conferences, games, dances and other things and you have to be willing to go to those things. If you start saying no now, you will be in for a rude awakening when you actually get your first teaching job. Plus, most of the time, they are a lot of fun! So go, support your school!!

After breakfast, Jayma and I met Lynn who took us clothes shopping. We weren't familiar with all the shopping centers so Lynn took us all over. We hit Old Navy and a few other places. Some of the big malls here are The Rim and La Cantera. La Cantera is awesome and this is coming from a guy who hates to shop (right, Lora?!). But it's designed like an outdoor mall and it's just very clean and fun. You have to go there to understand.

For a late lunch, we stopped at Rudy's, home of the Best Worst BBQ in Texas!! And they lived up to their name. We had a little bit of everything: pork, chicken, beef....hhhhmmmmmggoood! Jayma kept saying that this was a place that her dad would love so if they come down for Thanksgiving, we are taking them there.

Once we got home, we were a little beat but we definitely wanted to hit the pool for the first time. So, we got our swim gear prepped and put on our flippy floppies and headed to the pool!! I had to work on my farmer's tan!! Ha!! Everyone down here is so tan and I am whiter than Casper! I guess I will have to work on that.

After a few hours at the pool, we headed home and crashed for the evening! Just so everyone knows, by this time, Jayma's room is completely organized and I haven't really started. But I haven't been home long enough to get it done. ARGH!
